The
Costa Blanca
|
|
The
Costa Blanca is above all, a magnificent coastline, some 500
kilometers in length, stretching from Denia to Torrevieja in the
Province of Alicante . Its boundaries are not precisely marked,
however, and sometimes they are said to include parts of the
Costa del Azahar to the north of the Costa Calida, in the
province of Murcia, to the south.
The
light of the Costa Blanca gives this whole area a magic,
stirring atmosphere, shining down with blinding strength on its
clear, white beaches and the typically Mediterranean whitewashed
houses of its towns and villages.

As
one travels around the area, one notes gradual changes in the
scenery, as the flora varies from one place to another. So,
going south, the orange trees and rice-fields of the north give
way to a wilder, more arid landscape, in which vineyards,
olives, palms, prickly pears, cacti and almond trees
predominate. The mountains abound with sweet-smelling herbs such
as thyme or rosemary, and esparto and capers can also be found
in abundance in the more secluded mountain locations.

Since
the coast is no longer haunted by pirates, a little United
Europe has emerged around the “Peñon de Ifach”, the
landmark of the Costa Blanca. Phoenicians, Romans, Goths,
Moors and tourists who “conquered” the coast, gladly
settled there. Even after a majority of the tourists have
left the Costa Blanca, one can still hear foreign languages
spoken at the weekly markets. Chalés can be seen all along the
white hilly coast from picturesque but not sleepy Altea by the
sea, with its blue domed church “Nuestra Señora del
Consuelo”, all the way up to Dénia.
The
World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that The Costa
Blanca has one of the best environmentally friendly climate
zones on earth. Because of its outstanding water quality, most
beaches have been granted the “blue flag“.
The
Costa Blanca enjoys a warm, dry climate with moderate
temperatures in the winter. The bathing season lasts from mid May
to the end of October with water temperatures that can reach
more than 20 C degrees. Rheumatic, heart or skin diseases have
been known to get better or even heal in the Costa Blanca
environment.
